The Comes - No Side

The last of two albums I’m posting today at Dotty’s request. The Comes were one of Japan’s first hardcore bands and No Side is one of the best early punk records. Fast, rocking hardcore with melodic guitar and totally insane female lead vocals. The songs on this LP combine hell-shrieking vocals, massive hooks, and the stop-start hardcore of Minor Threat, but The Comes had a screeching, spastic energy unlike anything in the US.

Thug Murder - The 13th Round

At Dotty’s request, this is the first of a couple album’s I’m posting today that vary just a little from the type of content I normally feature. If you like punk though, you might find them quite a treat. Thug Murder are an all female Japanese punk band that were around from 1999 to 2001. I just happened to discover them around 10 years back when flipping through a Thrasher magazine at my local library. I saw this album listed among several others, and, loving all things Japanese as I did back then, I had to download it (and it wasn’t easy to find). I guess they opened for the Dropkick Murphys during a tour through Japan, and The Dropkick Murphys liked them so much they brought them on a US tour, and that’s how they ended up in Thrasher magazine.

Trentemøller - Into The Great Wide Yonder

Dark, complex, fantastic and chilling. A beautifully woven landscape of rich textures and imaginative sounds. This first song is the one that got me hooked, but the rest of the album revealed itself to be every bit worthwhile, the more I listened. Give some of the songs a chance to pick up.

Wild Nothing - Golden Haze

If you’ve been reading my posts you’ll probably know I’m quite a fan of Wild Nothing. They were one of my favorite bands last year, and the track title of this EP is my favorite song of theirs.

Dotty brought to my attention that the first album I posted was missing perhaps my favorite song, “Chinatown”, so I re-uploaded the album. Grab the updated album to the right, or go to the original post to check them out.

Starfucker - Reptilians

Honestly, I’ve known about this band since their first stuff a few years back, but was never that impressed with them, but their new album out of nowhere is fucking good. Upbeat, light-hearted, trippy electronic music.

Teengirl Fantasy - CD-R

Back-to-back Teengirl Fantasy albums? Why not! I talked them up in my last post, so read that one or just check out these head-nodding tracks. This first one is the one that got me into them in the first place, it’s so fucking good.

Teengirl Fantasy - 7AM

This band reminds me of so many good times and great moments shared, I’m surprised I haven’t posted them already. Their hypnotic, layered synths and looping, distorted samples are great to trip out to or just blast when driving around with friends.

Craft Spells - Idle Labor

This band took a few listens before I began to take notice, but now I fucking love them. I saw them play with Beach Fossils and Melted Toys last week, and they were so much fun. Feel good, light-hearted, dreamy, summer-time pop. For some reason they remind me of a cross between Wild Nothing and Depeche Mode. They have so many good tracks I had a hard time figuring out which to feature, that’s why I put up 5.

The New Division - The Rookie

Who doesn’t love them some fun, up-beat, 80s new wave inspired, slightly haunting electronic tunes? Well, if you do, you’ll love The New Division, as they offer just that. I wonder if they’re fans of New Order or Joy Division at all…

Beach Fossils - What a Pleasure

Catchy, jangly, lo-fi pop tunes give this band an aloof and dreamy sound. If you like Wild Nothing, you should dig them. Actually, the first song I list features Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing. They’re playing with Melted Toys and Craft Spells at Slim’s in San Francisco on Thurs (5/5), both great bands, if you’re in the area I suggest you check them out.

Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

I had a different album planned for this update, until I went to see Explosions in the Sky last night and had my mind blown. I took a tiny amount of shrooms with my sister before the show, and it turned out to be the most amazing, epic performance I’ve ever been to (maybe with one exception, though this other show was great for different reasons). Now I’m offering you their brand new album.

Explosions in the Sky have got to be my all time favorite band. They’ve withstood the test of time for me. I’ve liked them for somewhere around 7 or 8 years, and they still do it for me. Their music is my favorite to come down to from shrooms or acid, or to listen to on days when I’m completely hungover and out of it. They’re the perfect music to go to sleep or read a book to. They’re perfect for long drives on rainy days. They’re perfect for meditation or reflection. They’re perfect for if you want to get really baked and just sit in a bath or shower for an hour. Maybe it’s just me, but somehow they manage to capture that perfect sound that just pulls at the right strings. I will admit you’ve gotta be in the right mood to appreciate them. A mellow, somnolent mood. Save this band for such an occasion, and as with all post-rock, give it a change to build up.
